Guest Blog Post: Positivity by Emily Becca

A Pledge To Positivity


Oh hey there, I'm Em, an 18 year old blogger from Oxford, currently pondering on a gap year trying to see the work and enjoy some freedom.

So saying that, today I'm here to talk about positivity, more specifically: how to obtain a more positive mind-set. I'm sure many of you, like myself, have had moments where you struggle to really find any good in something *cough* A Levels *cough*. But sometimes all we need is a little bit of TLC and self care to see us through. So without further ado, I give you some ways, both obvious and not so obvious, to take a pledge to positivity and collect a positive mind-set:


TAKE A BREAK
Starting with what could be relatively obvious to some - taking a break. A breather from everything. We all get caught up in the hustle and bustle of things and we can lose our heads, it all becomes so busy. Removing yourself from the situation, whatever it may be: revision, work, friends, nights out; even just for 5 minutes, can just help clear your mind and let all the positive vibes come flowing back through. Meditation is always a good thing to start practicing to get into a pragmatic mind-set, and easily done whether you're on the train to work or just at home, you can get apps to help you or use YouTube videos - whichever works for you! Other ways of taking a break are the obvious, reading, writing, drawing, going for a walk and getting fresh air, escaping to something which you enjoy and can shut off for a bit whilst doing. 


BE FORGIVING
Something which can be harder to establish, but still, can be done. I'm not encouraging being so forgiving you're almost vulnerable, but, like your mother always said, fighting fire with fire creates more fire - and sometimes things are just better off being forgiven and forgotten.

But also, be forgiving on yourself. Didn't work out today? Don't worry there's a whole 6 other days in the week! Didn't do well on a test? Never mind, there's always other options and at the end of the day it's a letter on a page. Listen to how you talk to yourself and really be mindful about that. 


GRATITUDE
Being grateful for the little things in life is something we all really strive to do, but it can be hard to practice. So in the evening, maybe in a dairy or on your phone, or just in your head, note 5 things you were grateful for today. It makes you so much more open minded to things you may have been missing before on a day to day basis.


LET IT OUT
This is an obvious one, but I feel always should be preached - don't bottle it up. Talk to someone you trust about your feelings, or if you can't do that at least write them down! Sometimes we build on these thoughts and they implode on us, leading us to shut down. But just letting it out helps clear your mind to keep these irrational thoughts at bay. And you can evaluate it with a clear realistic outlook, and maybe a second opinion, leading to a more positive outcome. 


MESSY SPACE, MESSY HEAD
Honestly this is so, so true, I was always sceptical however sorting out my space every so often and tidying up just makes you feel so refreshed and whether you're working or just having some you time, it'll make you feel so much better as you're not distracted by the mess.


BUT WHAT ABOUT YOU?
We can get so caught up looking after others we really forget to look after ourselves, and keeping yourself in prim condition can be really pivotal for your mind-set. If you're feeling refreshed you'll be ready to take on the day, if you're feeling old and wasting away, it'll have the opposite effect. Do some mindful exercises like mentions before in taking a break; pamper yourself; turn off any screens and just treat yo self.
